The Problem

You signed a paper. Now you need it on a PDF.

You printed a contract, signed it, and now you need to send it back. But you don't have a scanner. Or maybe you want to add your real handwritten signature to every document you send — not a typed cursive font, not a scribble made with a mouse, but your actual signature.

The common workarounds suck: drawing with a trackpad looks like a child's forgery, typing your name in a cursive font fools nobody, and paying $15/month for DocuSign just to send two contracts a year is absurd.

The real solution: sign a piece of paper, take a photo with your phone, remove the background to get a clean transparent PNG, and drop it into any document. It looks better than DocuSign. It's your actual handwriting. And it takes about 60 seconds.

Step by Step

How to get a clean transparent signature

1. Sign on blank white paper

Use a black or dark blue pen on plain white printer paper. Don't use pencil — it's too faint and the gray graphite gets confused with paper shadows. Don't use lined paper, grid paper, or paper with any printing on it. The plainer the background, the better the result.

Sign at your normal size. Don't try to write small to "fit the box" — you can resize the PNG later in your document. Make the signature roughly the same size you'd use on a real document.

2. Photograph it properly

This step matters more than you'd think. Hold your phone directly above the paper, parallel to it. Make sure the lighting is even — natural daylight from a window works best. Avoid casting a shadow from your phone or hand across the signature. If the paper looks yellow on one side and white on the other, the background removal will have to work harder.

If you have a flatbed scanner, use it. 300 DPI, color mode, save as JPG. But a phone photo works perfectly well if you pay attention to lighting.

3. Use Smart mode, not AI

This is the key tip. For signatures — black ink on white paper — use Smart mode, not the AI models. Smart mode detects the dominant background color (white paper) and removes it. It's instant — no 40MB model download. And for high-contrast ink-on-paper, it actually produces cleaner results than the neural network, because AI models sometimes treat thin pen strokes as "noise" and erode them.

If Smart mode doesn't give you a perfect result — which can happen if your paper has shadows or isn't uniformly white — switch to Fast AI mode (~4MB download). It'll handle uneven lighting better than Smart mode while still being quick.

4. Tighten the edges if needed

After processing, use the Tighten Edges slider (0-5px). For signatures, 1-2px of edge tightening cleans up any white fringing around the ink without eating into the pen strokes. If your signature has very thin loops (common with fountain pens), keep it at 0-1px.

5. Download and use anywhere

Download as PNG. The background is now transparent. You can:

Drop it into a Word document — Insert → Picture → select your PNG. Resize and position above the signature line.
Add it to a PDF — Use Preview on Mac (Tools → Annotate → Signature → Manage → Create from Image) or any PDF editor.
Use in Google Docs — Insert → Image → Upload from computer. Set text wrapping to "In front of text" to position freely.
Save as a stamp in Adobe Acrobat — Tools → Stamp → Custom Stamps → Create from file.
Keep it on your desktop — Save the PNG somewhere you can find it. Use it every time you need to sign something.

Tips & Gotchas

What to watch out for

Blue ink vs black ink

Black ink on white paper is ideal — maximum contrast, easiest for both Smart mode and AI to separate. Dark blue works nearly as well. Avoid light blue, red, or green ink — these colors can be close enough to paper tones (or paper shadows) that the tool struggles to distinguish ink from background. If you must use colored ink, use AI Best mode.

Thin fountain pen strokes

If you use a fountain pen with a very fine nib, your strokes might be only 1-2 pixels wide in the photo. Smart mode handles this fine because it only removes colors near the background color. But if you use AI mode, avoid edge tightening above 1px — it'll eat your thin strokes. You can also take the photo at higher resolution (or scan at 600 DPI) so the strokes are physically more pixels wide.

Paper with texture

Some fancy paper has visible texture — laid finish, linen, cotton. This texture creates shadows and color variation that Smart mode might interpret as "not background." If your paper has texture, use Fast or Balanced AI mode — the neural network handles texture variation better than simple color clustering.

Multiple signatures on one page

If you need signatures from multiple people (both parties on a contract), process them separately. Photograph each person's signature individually on clean paper. Combining two signatures on one sheet and trying to separate them after background removal creates extra work.

Alternative Methods

Other ways to digitize a signature (and why this is better)

✍️ Draw with a stylus or Apple Pencil

Looks clean, but almost nobody's Apple Pencil signature looks like their real pen signature. The friction and feel of paper produces different handwriting.

📱 Sign on a phone screen with your finger

Looks terrible. Always. The line width is uniform, there's no pressure variation, and it reads as "digitally signed" in a bad way.

🖨️ Print → sign → scan with a flatbed scanner

Works fine but requires owning a scanner. The background removal approach gets you the same result with just your phone camera.

🖋️ Use a cursive font that looks like handwriting

Looks fake because it IS fake. Identical letters every time. No human variation. Anyone who looks at it for more than a second knows it's a font.

The background removal method gives you your actual signature in your actual handwriting, with all the natural variation in stroke width, slant, and pressure that makes your signature yours. It's the closest thing to signing in person.
