Remove Watermark from Image
Remove watermarks, logos, timestamps, and text overlays from the edges and corners of images. Free, private, in-browser.
What this tool can actually do โ honest version
Most "watermark remover" websites make big promises and deliver blurry smudges. Let me be straight about what works and what doesn't, so you don't waste your time.
Background removal + crop
This is the most reliable approach. It works when the watermark sits on a relatively uniform area (sky, wall, grass, solid color) and doesn't overlap with the main subject.
- Upload your image to the background remover. Select Balanced or Best AI mode โ not Smart mode (Smart mode removes the dominant background color, which isn't what you want here).
- Process the image. The AI separates the watermark from the background. If the watermark is on a solid-ish area, the surrounding pixels will fill the gap. For best results, use the Best model โ it handles the edge between watermark and real content most naturally.
- If the watermark is near an edge, crop it out. Click the โ๏ธ Crop button in the edit tools before processing. Crop to exclude the watermark area entirely. This is lossless โ you're just removing pixels, not modifying any. Most corner watermarks can be cropped out without losing anything important.
- Download and check. Zoom in on the area where the watermark was. Check that the fill looks natural. If it's patchy, try again with Best mode โ the higher-quality model does better infill.
Color-targeted removal with Smart mode
Old digital cameras (especially point-and-shoots from the 2000s) burned orange or red date stamps into the bottom-right corner of every photo. These are actually easier to remove than semi-transparent watermarks because the stamp color is very different from natural photo colors.
- Crop the photo so the timestamp area fills most of the frame. This gives the AI more pixels to work with around the stamp.
- Upload the cropped section and use Smart mode. Smart mode detects the dominant colors in the timestamp area (orange/yellow on varying background). Set threshold lower (around 25-30) to target only the stamp color.
- The stamp pixels become transparent. Composite the result back onto the original photo. The surrounding pixels naturally fill the gap.
This is a workaround, not a dedicated feature. For photos where the timestamp is the only issue, it works well. For heavily watermarked images, see the limitations section below.
Removing text you added to an image
If you added text to an image (a label, a note, a caption) and want to undo it, the approach depends on what's behind the text:
- Text on a solid or simple background: Use the background remover. The AI treats the text as "foreground" and removes it, leaving the background. Works best with Best mode.
- Text overlapping the subject: This is the hard case. Background removal alone won't fix it because removing the text also removes the subject pixels underneath. You need actual inpainting. See the "When you need a different tool" section below.
When you need a different tool
BackgroundDelete's AI model is designed for foreground/background separation. It was not trained for inpainting (filling missing image regions with plausible content). For watermarks that:
- Overlap the main subject (a logo across a person's face)
- Cover detailed or textured areas (text over a patterned fabric)
- Are semi-transparent and spread across the entire image (stock photo watermarks)
- Require pixel-perfect restoration
...you need a proper inpainting tool. Here are the options, ordered by capability:
I'm not going to pretend this tool does something it doesn't. If your use case is "remove a semi-transparent Shutterstock watermark from the center of a photo," this isn't the tool for that โ and honestly, you should just buy the photo. The creator earned it.
