Current Instagram image dimensions (2026)
Instagram changes its recommended sizes every couple of years. These are correct as of mid-2026. All dimensions assume you're uploading at the highest quality — Instagram compresses everything on their end, so feeding it a properly-sized image means less compression artifacts.
Key rule: Instagram displays everything at a max width of 1080px. Uploading images larger than 1080px wide is pointless — Instagram will downscale them, and their compression algorithm will introduce artifacts. Upload exactly 1080px wide for best quality. Minimum: 320px, but your image will look terrible at that resolution.
Why your Instagram photos look blurry
You uploaded a crystal-clear photo from your DSLR. On Instagram it looks like a 2006 flip phone photo. Here's what's actually happening:
- You uploaded at the wrong size. If your image is 4000×6000 and Instagram downsamples it to 1080×1350, their compression algorithm makes decisions about which pixels to keep. Those decisions are often wrong. Feed Instagram a pre-sized 1080×1350 image and you control the downsampling.
- You uploaded a PNG. Instagram converts everything to JPEG. If you upload a 12MB PNG, their JPEG conversion is aggressive. Pre-convert to JPEG at 85-95% quality, sized to 1080px wide. The file will be ~200-500KB — Instagram won't re-compress it as heavily.
- You're uploading from an Android phone. Through no fault of Android itself, Instagram's Android app has historically applied more compression than the iOS app. Uploading from a computer (via a browser or scheduling tool) bypasses this. If you're on Android, resize on your computer and upload from there.
- You added text in Instagram's editor. Instagram's built-in text tool renders at screen resolution, not image resolution. Text that looks sharp while editing becomes fuzzy after posting. Add text before uploading — use any image editor and flatten it into the image.
Resize and upload without quality loss
- Pick your format. Square for general posts, Portrait for engagement, Story for full-screen vertical. If you're doing a carousel, all images in the carousel will be cropped to match the first image's aspect ratio — so decide on the format before you start.
- Resize to exactly 1080px wide. Use the image resizer tool with the Instagram presets. It crops and scales to exactly the right dimensions. If your original isn't the right aspect ratio, the tool lets you position the crop area.
- Export as JPEG at high quality. After resizing, export as JPEG (not PNG). Use 90-95% quality. The file should be under 500KB. Instagram applies less compression to smaller files — counterintuitive but true.
- Upload from a computer if possible. Use Instagram's web upload (instagram.com → the + button) or a scheduling tool. Desktop browsers upload the file as-is. Mobile apps apply additional compression on top of Instagram's own compression.
Resizing multiple photos for a carousel or batch post
If you're preparing a carousel post or scheduling a week's worth of content, you need all images at the same dimensions. The image resizer handles this: select your preset, upload all images, and each one is cropped to the same output size. Consistent sizing = professional-looking feed.
Carousel rule: Instagram crops all carousel slides to the first slide's aspect ratio. If slide 1 is square (1:1), all subsequent slides WILL be cropped to 1:1 — even if you uploaded them as portrait. Make all carousel images the same dimensions before uploading.
