Remove Background from Hand-Drawn Sketches

Your sketchbook is analog. The internet is digital.

You draw on paper because it feels right — the friction of pencil, the flow of ink, the immediacy of a sketchbook that never needs to charge. But at some point you need that drawing in digital form: to color it in Procreate, to use it in a design, to post it online with a colored background, to sell it as clip art, or to print it on a t-shirt.

Scanning or photographing the drawing is easy. Getting rid of the paper background so your line art sits on a transparent layer — that's the part that usually requires Photoshop and 20 minutes of fiddling with Levels and Magic Wand. It doesn't need to.

With background removal AI (or Smart mode for high-contrast drawings), you can go from paper sketch to transparent PNG in under 30 seconds. Here's exactly how, with different approaches depending on your medium and paper.

From paper to transparent PNG

1. Draw with digital in mind

A few choices while you're still at the paper stage make background removal dramatically easier:

  • Use white paper. Not cream, not off-white, not toned tan. Pure white. The closer your paper is to #FFFFFF, the better Smart mode works and the less the AI has to think about what's paper vs. what's graphite.
  • Use dark, consistent lines. Black ink (Micron, Copic Multiliner, fountain pen) is ideal. For pencil, use 2B or softer — the contrast against white paper is stronger than HB or harder leads. Avoid 6H mechanical pencil — it's too faint.
  • Avoid smudging. Graphite smudges are the enemy of clean background removal. They're gray — halfway between the white paper and the dark lines — and confuses both Smart mode and AI about what to remove. Use a clean sheet of paper under your drawing hand, or work from the top-left down if you're right-handed.
  • Keep the paper clean. Coffee rings, eraser crumbs, and margin doodles all complicate the separation. If the drawing is precious, photograph it before you add notes, stains, or other marks to the page.

2. Scan or photograph — which is better?

A flatbed scanner is ideal if you have one. 300 DPI minimum, 600 DPI if the drawing has fine detail. Scan in color mode (not grayscale, not black & white) — color mode preserves the subtle paper texture and ink variation that helps the background removal distinguish paper from pigment. Save as JPG or PNG.

A phone camera works fine if you control the lighting. Place the sketchbook flat on a table. Use daylight from a window — position the paper so the light hits it evenly. Hold the phone parallel to the paper (use the grid overlay if your camera app has one). Check that there's no shadow from your phone or hand falling on the drawing. If you see one edge of the paper looking brighter than the other, reposition.

If you're photographing rather than scanning, try to fill the frame with the drawing — cropping later reduces the resolution available for edge detection.

3. Choose the right mode for your medium

This is where most guides give generic advice. The right mode depends on what you drew with:

🖊️ Black ink on white paperSmart mode. Maximum contrast = trivial for color-based detection. Smart mode is instant and produces perfectly clean lines. No need to download a neural network.
✏️ Pencil (graphite) on white paperBalanced AI mode. Pencil strokes have variable density. Smart mode struggles with light gray lines — it can't tell a 2H line from a paper shadow. The neural network understands that gray lines are intentional marks, not background noise.
🎨 Colored pencil, marker, or watercolorBest AI mode. Color complicates everything — a light yellow marker stroke is closer to white paper than to black ink, and Smart mode will delete it as "background." The full-precision AI model handles color variation across the entire drawing.
📄 Drawing on toned or textured paperBest AI mode. Toned paper (tan, gray, kraft) is NOT a uniform background. Smart mode will fail because it expects one dominant background color. The AI model understands that the paper itself has a color and can separate it from the marks on top of it.

4. Check your lines

After processing, zoom in and inspect the edges of your lines. Look for:

  • Broken or eroded lines — if fine hatching or thin strokes got eaten, you used too much edge tightening. Set Tighten Edges to 0 for ink drawings. For pencil, 0-1px max.
  • Gray halo around lines — leftover paper texture that wasn't fully removed. This happens with pencil on textured paper. Try Best mode or increase edge tightening to 1-2px.
  • Paper grain still visible — common with cold-press watercolor paper or rough sketchbook paper. Best AI mode handles this better than Fast/Balanced. You can also pre-process: adjust the photo's contrast and brightness before uploading (the edit tools let you crop, but not adjust levels — do that in your phone's photo editor first).

5. Use the transparent PNG

Download the PNG. Your line art is now on a transparent background. Here's what you can do with it:

  • Color digitally — Import into Procreate, Photoshop, Krita, or Clip Studio Paint. Put your line art on the top layer, set to Multiply blending mode. Add color layers underneath. The transparent background means you color freely without a white rectangle blocking everything.
  • Overlay on photos or designs — Place your sketch on top of photos, textures, or colored backgrounds. The transparency means the drawing blends naturally instead of sitting in a white box.
  • Convert to vector — Import into Illustrator or Inkscape and run Image Trace. Transparent PNG with clean lines converts to vector paths much more cleanly than a photograph of paper.
  • Use as a sticker or stamp — In Procreate or Photoshop, select the opaque pixels (the lines), expand by 2-3px, and fill with white on a layer below. Now you have a sticker with a white border, ready to use in digital planners, notes apps, or collages.
  • Sell as clip art — Etsy and Creative Market sellers sell transparent PNG line art sets. Each drawing needs a clean transparent background. Process them all in batch mode.

Why not just use Photoshop's Magic Wand?

The traditional method — open in Photoshop, adjust Levels to crush the paper to white, use Magic Wand to select the white, delete it — has been the standard for 20 years. It works, but it has problems:

  • Magic Wand is binary. A pixel is either selected or it's not. There's no partial transparency, no anti-aliasing at the edges of your lines. Zoom in and you see jagged stair-step edges on what should be smooth curves.
  • Levels adjustments degrade your lines. Crushing the white point to blow out the paper also lightens your pencil strokes. You lose the subtle variation in line weight that gives hand-drawn work its character.
  • It's manual and inconsistent. Every drawing needs different Levels settings depending on the paper, the lighting, and the medium. A batch of 20 drawings might need 20 different adjustments.

AI background removal handles anti-aliased edges properly — pixels at the boundary between ink and paper get partial transparency, which makes lines look smooth at any zoom level. It handles variable line weight naturally. And it works the same way on every drawing, which makes batch processing predictable.
