Why do I get a PNG when I uploaded a JPG?

JPEG doesn't support transparency — there's no alpha channel in the JPEG specification. To have a transparent background, you need PNG (or WebP, or another format that supports alpha). The tool always outputs PNG after background removal. If you specifically need a JPG for a platform that requires it (Amazon main images), use the white background tool to composite onto white and download as JPG.
Does compressing my JPG before background removal affect quality?

Yes — heavily compressed JPEGs have blocking artifacts and color banding that can confuse the AI model. The segmentation quality drops noticeably on JPEGs below quality ~60. If possible, work from the highest-quality source you have. If your only source is a compressed web image, use Fast or Balanced mode — these are less sensitive to compression artifacts than Best mode.
Can I remove background from a JPG and keep it as JPG?

Not directly — because JPG doesn't support transparency. But you can: (1) remove the background here, get a transparent PNG, (2) use the background replacement panel to add a white/colored background, (3) download as JPG. This gives you a JPG with your subject on the background color you chose. It's one extra step but gives you full control over the final background color.
Why do some edges look pixelated after removing background from my JPG?

JPEG compression creates 8Ă—8 pixel blocks. At object boundaries, these blocks can include both foreground and background colors, creating a "blocky" transition. The AI sees these blocks as part of the image. Mitigation: use the Tighten Edges slider at 1-2px to trim the blocky edge pixels. For critical work, use the Best model and avoid heavily compressed source JPEGs.
