Remove Background from PNG Images

PNG files can already have transparency — if your PNG has an existing alpha channel, the AI works with the RGB data and produces a new alpha mask. JPG files never have transparency, so removing a background from a JPG inherently means converting to PNG. For JPG-specific background removal with the option to output as JPG, use the JPG background remover.

It depends on the screenshot. The ISNet model is trained on natural images (photos), not UI. For screenshots where you want to isolate a specific element (like a product image inside a webpage screenshot), results vary. If the element has clear visual separation from the surrounding UI, Smart mode often works better than AI — it detects the background color around the edges and removes it. Crop the screenshot tightly around the element first for best results.

This is matting — anti-aliased edge pixels between your subject and the original white background became light-colored. On dark backgrounds, they show as a white fringe. Fix: use Tighten Edges at 1-3px to erode those pixels. For precise control, open in GIMP and use Colors → Color to Alpha, selecting white. This targets exactly the matte pixels without affecting the subject.
