Make Product Photos with White Backgrounds
Amazon requires it. eBay recommends it. Buyers expect it. Here's how to get white-background product photos without buying a lightbox or learning Photoshop.
White backgrounds sell more products
Amazon requires pure white backgrounds (RGB 255,255,255) for main product images. eBay's listing quality score penalizes cluttered backgrounds. Etsy buyers click more on clean product shots. Shopify themes look professional when all product images share a consistent white background.
But most small sellers don't have a photo studio. They're photographing products on kitchen tables, on the floor near a window, or on whatever surface has good light. This guide is about getting white-background results from those real-world photos — not from a $500 lightbox setup.
From phone photo to marketplace-ready image
1. Take a good photo (even without a studio)
You don't need a lightbox. You need soft, even light. Place your product near a large window on an overcast day, or in a room with indirect sunlight. If the light casts strong shadows, hang a white bedsheet between the window and the product to diffuse it. Avoid your camera flash — it creates harsh highlights and unnatural shadows that look bad even after background removal.
For small products (jewelry, electronics, cosmetics), a piece of white poster board from the dollar store makes a perfectly adequate sweep — curve it so there's no visible horizon line. For large products (furniture, appliances), photograph against a plain blank wall with even lighting. The key is contrast between the product and whatever's behind it. AI background removal works best when the product clearly differs from its background.
2. Choose the right processing mode
Balanced mode is the sweet spot for product photos. It handles edges better than Fast mode (important for products with fur, hair, or textured edges) but doesn't require the 80MB Best model download. Use Best mode if you're selling high-ticket items where image quality directly affects conversion — jewelry, watches, luxury goods. Use Fast mode for quick listing drafts or if you're processing dozens of products.
Don't use Smart mode for product photos. Smart mode is for logos and graphics on perfectly uniform backgrounds. Product photos almost always have shadows, gradients, or texture in the background that Smart mode won't handle.
3. Add a pure white background (#FFFFFF)
After the AI removes the background, click the Background panel below your result.
Select the Solid Color tab and click the white swatch — or verify the hex value is
#FFFFFF. This replaces the transparent background with pure white. Amazon's system
checks this — if your white is off-white (#F5F5F5 or #FEFEFE), it may flag your image.
If your product is also white (a white t-shirt, white electronics), the default white background
will make the edges invisible. In that case, temporarily switch to a light gray background
(#F0F0F0) to check the edge quality, then switch back to pure white for download.
Or keep the gray if your platform allows it — eBay and Etsy do.
4. Tighten the edges
The Tighten Edges slider (0-5px) removes the faint halo that sometimes remains around the product after AI processing. For product photos, 1-2px is usually right. Too much (>3px) and you'll start eating into the product itself — especially problematic for products with fine details like hair, fur, or thin cables. Zoom in and check before downloading.
5. Download both formats
Download PNG first (transparent background) — keep this as your master file. You can add different backgrounds later without re-processing. Then switch to white background and download JPG — this is what you'll upload to marketplaces. JPG is smaller and universally accepted. Amazon prefers JPG. Most platforms want images under 10MB.
What each marketplace expects
Pure white (RGB 255,255,255). Product fills 85%+ of frame. Minimum 1000px on longest side (2000px recommended for zoom). JPG or TIFF. No watermarks, no logos, no text on the image. No props unless they're part of the product. Main image MUST be white background — additional images can be lifestyle.
White or light gray background recommended but not enforced. Minimum 500px, recommended 1600px. JPG, PNG, BMP, or GIF. No borders, no watermarks, no text overlays. eBay's search algorithm favors listings with clean backgrounds — they've said so publicly.
No strict requirements. Whatever looks good in your theme. But consistent backgrounds across all product images make your store look professional. White or transparent PNG recommended so it works with any theme's background color.
White backgrounds perform better in search (Etsy's algorithm favors them). Minimum 2000px for the shortest side if using Etsy's zoom feature. Horizontal 4:3 or 5:4 aspect ratio recommended. Lifestyle/context shots encouraged as secondary images.
No formal white background requirement. Square photos preferred. Natural light photos of the actual item perform better than stock photos. Clean backgrounds improve sharing/reposting rates in Poshmark's social feed.
Processing dozens or hundreds of products
If you have more than a few products, use the Bulk Background Remover. Drop up to 50 images at once. Each one is processed sequentially (they share the downloaded AI model, so subsequent images are faster). All results download as a ZIP file.
Workflow tip for bulk processing: photograph all products in one session under the same lighting conditions. Use the same AI mode for all (Balanced). This gives you consistent edge quality across your entire catalog. If you process half on Fast and half on Best, the quality difference between product images will be noticeable in your store.
For white background specifically, use the E-Commerce Product Cleaner — it's pre-configured for each platform's output requirements and automatically composites white backgrounds on all results.
When background removal won't save a bad photo
Background removal is not magic. It won't fix:
- Blurry photos — if the product is out of focus, removing the background won't make it sharp. Retake the photo.
- Products the same color as the background — a white mug on a white wall, a black shirt on a dark surface. AI struggles when there's no contrast. Use a contrasting background for the photo.
- Uneven lighting across the product — if one side is brightly lit and the other is in shadow, that stays after background removal. Diffuse your light source.
- Wrinkled or dirty products — steam your clothes. Clean your items. Remove stickers and tags you don't want in the photo. Background removal reveals the product, flaws and all.
The best results come from good source photos. Spend 5 extra minutes on lighting and staging before you take the shot. It saves 30 minutes of trying to fix a bad image in post-processing.
