Frequently Asked Questions

Last updated: June 27, 2026

General

1. Is BackgroundDelete really free?

Yes! BackgroundDelete is completely free to use with no hidden costs, no premium tiers, and no usage limits. You can remove backgrounds from as many images as you want without ever paying a cent. We built this tool to be accessible to everyone.

2. Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. All image processing happens entirely within your browser using the IMG.LY background removal AI library. Your images never leave your device — they are never uploaded to any server, and we never see, store, or have access to them at any point. This also means you can use BackgroundDelete offline after the initial page load.

3. Do I need to create an account?

No account or sign-up is required. Just open the website, upload an image, and start removing backgrounds instantly. There's no registration, no email verification, and no login — ever.

4. Can I use BackgroundDelete on mobile?

Yes! BackgroundDelete works on any modern browser, including mobile browsers on iOS and Android. The interface is fully responsive and adapts to your screen size. Background removal processing on mobile may be slightly slower than on desktop due to hardware differences, but all features work the same way.

Image Formats & Limits

5. What image formats are supported?

BackgroundDelete supports a wide range of image formats: JPG, PNG, WEBP, AVIF, BMP, TIFF, GIF, and SVG. For best results with AI-based background removal (Fast/Balanced/Best modes), we recommend using JPG or PNG. SVG files work with the Smart mode. The maximum file size is 10 MB per image.

6. Is there a file size limit?

Yes, the maximum file size is 10 MB per image. This limit ensures that processing remains fast and reliable in your browser. If your image exceeds this limit, try resizing or compressing it before uploading. There is no limit on image dimensions (resolution), though very large images may take longer to process.

Processing Modes

7. What's the difference between Fast, Balanced, and Best modes?

These three modes use different variants of the ISNet background removal AI model, trading off between speed and quality:

  • Fast: Uses a quantized (quint8) model that runs quickly with lower memory usage. Great for quick results on simple images.
  • Balanced: Uses a half-precision (fp16) model that offers a good middle ground between speed and accuracy. Recommended for most use cases.
  • Best: Uses the full-precision (fp32) model for the highest quality results. Slightly slower but produces the most accurate edges and fine detail preservation.

8. What is Smart mode?

Smart mode is a canvas-based color detection algorithm designed for images with text, logos, icons, or graphics on solid backgrounds. Instead of using AI, it detects the dominant background color and removes pixels matching that color. This works particularly well for screenshots of text, app icons, logos on white/black backgrounds, and simple graphic designs. Smart mode is also the fastest option since it doesn't need to load an AI model.

9. What is the "Tighten edges" slider?

The Tighten edges slider applies mask erosion to shrink the foreground boundary inward. This is useful when your result has a slight halo or fringe around the edges of the subject. By increasing the erosion value, you can tighten the mask and remove residual background pixels along the edges. The default value is 0 (no erosion), and you can adjust it up to 5 pixels.

Results & Usage

10. Why is my result not perfect?

The ISNet AI model is highly effective for most images, particularly portraits and photos with clear subjects. However, it may struggle with:

  • Complex scenes with multiple overlapping subjects
  • Images where the subject color is very similar to the background
  • Low-resolution or heavily compressed images
  • Images with fine, wispy details like hair blowing in the wind

If the AI result isn't satisfactory, try using Smart mode for graphics, text, or logos. You can also try the "Best" quality mode, adjust the Tighten edges slider, or experiment with different background replacement options to improve the visual result.

11. Can I replace the background with a different color or image?

Yes! After removing the background, you can replace it with:

  • Solid colors: Choose from preset swatches or pick any custom color using the color picker. White is the default.
  • Gradients: Apply one of several preset gradients for a professional look.
  • Custom images: Upload your own background image to composite behind your foreground subject.

You can also choose to keep a transparent background by downloading the result as a PNG.

12. Can I use the results commercially?

Yes, you own the output images you generate with BackgroundDelete and can use them for any purpose, including commercial use. Since all processing happens locally in your browser, we never claim any rights over your images. You are free to use your background-removed images in products, marketing materials, websites, social media, print designs, or any other commercial context — no attribution required.
